From left, Mike Bauman, Colorado Division of Wildlife district wildlife manager, helps Nick Moyer and Austin Corson, both Moffat County High School seniors, free a bull elk from a DOW trap Thursday in northwest Moffat County. The traps give DOW officials an opportunity to fit some of the animals with radio collars, which the agency uses to track migration patterns.
Bauman laughs as he and Moyer first enter the trap and struggle to keep the bull from getting free. DOW officials collar only cow elk because the bull elk can choke when their necks swell during mating season. Instead, they clip ear tags on bull elk so they can track the animals if a hunter kills one.
Colorado Division of Wildlife officials collar a cow elk Thursday, after the animal caused the trap to collapse inward. Officers cut the animal free from the cage's netting and examined it to see if it would need stitches for the cut on its leg. Mike Swaro, DOW district wildlife manager, said it was the second time an elk had been injured inside a cage out of about 100 animals trapped in the last two years.
