Eric Fleming competed in the Lane Frost Challenge bull riding competition during Grand Olde West Days, and one week later, he took his turn in Las Animas. Fleming, along with Taylor and Troy Vernon, will travel June 10 to Lamar for the Colorado High School rodeo state finals.
Kayanna Klimper holds her dog, Madeline, during the judging of last year's Huck Finn Fun Day. Children dressed up for the event in their best Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher attire for the costume contest and fishing. This year's annual Huck Finn Fun Fishing Day takes place from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Loudy-Simpson Park.
Bill Shue talks Wednesday about Alex, his resident bull and one of five miniature Hereford cattle he recently acquired. Shue, whose ranch is located north of Craig, said the miniature cows measure 42 inches at the shoulder and weigh in at 1,000 pounds. A typical Hereford bull tips the scales at 1,100 pounds and measures more than 50 inches at the shoulder.
Bill Shue, and his wife, Dona, have operated the Two Shoes Ranch north of Craig for 10 years, but they only acquired their five miniature Hereford cattle Sunday. Shue said one of the benefits to the smaller-sized cows is they eat about half the amount of a regular Hereford yet produce three-quarters of the meat.
