Area representatives worry the Shell Frontier Oil & Gas water right filing on the Yampa River has the potential to use all the remaining water available for development. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service limits the amount of water that can be appropriated to protect four endangered fish species.
Mike Swaro, a Colorado Division of Wildlife district wildlife manager, surveys the hills in Game Management Unit 13, south of Craig. Swaro said he's taken part in classification flights for about seven years, but he still doesn't eat beforehand because the helicopter pilots take wild swings through the air to keep up with elk on the ground.
Elk run across the hills a short distance south of Craig, near Trapper Coal Co. Hundreds of animals were spotted Wednesday near Knez Divide, a couple of miles east of state Highway 13.
