A helicopter directs wild horses into holding pens at Sand Wash Basin. The project, sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, is meant to thin the heard to a size the local habitat is able to support. - This was a really neat story. I was impressed with how the Bureau of Land Management handled the delicate situation, and the BLM media official there was nice enough to lend me his 300mm lens so I could get this photo.
This portrait of Moffat County High School cross-country runner Alicia Nelson was taken for the Fall Sports Preview. - I backlit Nelson with the sun and used a fill flash held off to the side to light her face. Alicia always has been a good sport about the sometimes-wacky photo ideas sports writer John Vandelinder and I come up with. I think this time, it really paid off.
A Moffat County Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Crew member stands atop a slash woodpile, defending the wood behind him by spraying down the blaze's edges. By late afternoon, firefighters attempted to isolate the fire by using bulldozers and heavy trucks to move woodpiles. - This photo was taken in April, after a wood grinder caught fire at Butler Ranch Wood Products, a mill operation northwest of Craig on County Road 106. The fire was immense in size, and the heat in the area was overwhelming. I shot this with a 500mm lens, which compresses the image and creates the wavy effect that I thought helped to convey the story.
Ethan Powers, 7, screams while doing sprints during Bad Dogs wrestling practice at Moffat County High School. - Bad Dogs are a great bunch of coaches and children. I took this in March and was really pleased with the results.
Ian Duzik douses Mackenzie Camblin during a water fight at the Moffat County Fair. - Sometimes when I am out, I can see a photo coming from a mile away. I saw Ian sneaking up on Mackenzie with the water bucket and placed my camera near the ground and caught this using my wide-angle lens.
