Two members of the West Elk Mine rescue team close off an "airlock" in a simulated mine. Twenty teams from Colorado and Utah are competing in a mine rescue competition this week at Moffat County High School.
Victor Cordes helps Keaton Hickson, 10, find the right-sized helmet. Hickson, along with more than 100 children ages 7 to 12, were assigned teams for Doak Walker Football on Wednesday at Craig City Hall.
"Moonscape" is the name given to the charred land left behind after a particularly destructive stretch of fire, such as the ground inside the Allred Fire area. T.J. Gholson said it takes longer for vegetation to grow back in these areas. However, a lot of the land in the area had a more preferable "mosaic" burn pattern, which left some grasses and trees standing.
A Bureau of Land Management lookout watches the Allred Fire area from a hilltop on the edge of the burn zone.
Virgil Arment, helicopter crew supervisor for the Wyoming High Desert Helitack, joined the Allred Fire for the BLM's initial attack on the fire. Now that crews have contained the flames, he and his seven-person crew plan to return home to re-supply for another deployment.
