A wildfire 20 miles west of Maybell is estimated to have covered a 3,000-acre area, the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit reported. Firefighters said lightning caused the fire.

Bruce Benson gave a 20-minute speech at Tuesday's Rotary Club meeting about the state of higher education in Colorado. The University of Colorado has lost $50 million in state funding, with more cuts possible.
