A bowling ball races down the alley. Each machine contains 21 pins, two sets of pins with one extra.
Steven Skiff works on a ball lift rod in one of the lanes. Each lane shuts down when the motor inside detects a stop in the line. The Brunswick machines have each cycled about 100,000 times, he estimated.
Pins set up before being placed on the lane. The pins are made of wood, with a plastic coating, and each is made to weigh the exact same amount.
Steven Skiff watches over the lanes from the perch about where the pins lie. Skiff said each lane is stripped, oiled and cleaned every day to assure a reliable bowling experience. “One thing about bowling,” he said, “everything is constant. It’s all about maintaining consistency.”
