Onlookers watch as a man calls to his dog during the preliminaries at the Meeker Classic. The event began in 1987 and was thought up by Gus Halandras, the then-mayor, to help revitalize the economy in the area. Many from the town volunteer, with 200-plus volunteers helping pull off the event. One such volunteer, Mary Strang, said, "It's about community, and this is one of the best things in the world for our community."
A Marino ewe, waits as one from her group takes off with Jake, a border collie owned by Kathy Knox, in pursuit. The ewe are about 2 years old and are raised in the mountains near the Vail area.
Shep, a 4-year-old Border Collie, handled by Lyle Lad of Georgetown, Ohio, directs the sheep toward the final holding pen. The pair scored a 91, one of the highest scores of the day. Lad has been working with sheep and dogs for 22 years and travels all over the country, she said. "My goal is to make enough to pay for and entry fees. That way, I get a free vacation."
Dan, a Border Collie, and Dusty, a White-Throated Capuchin, of Team Ghost Riders, round up goats during half-time at the Meeker Classic. Three dogs with monkeys in tow rounded up sheep for onlookers as part of Tim Lepard's comedy show.
Kathy Knox of Butler, Mo., with Jake, a 10-year-old border collie, directs sheep through the course at the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials. Knox and Jake were disqualified because a sheep left the group. Sandra Besseghini, chairwoman of publicity and school outreach for the Meeker Classic, said, "Every year, we have a ewe (female sheep) take off, and we have to pick her up downtown."
