The crew spaces out a substance similar to white tissue paper to make a checkerboard pattern on the centerline of the rink, which will then be iced over. The layer before has been painted white while all the lines you see on the rink are made from colored paper.

The freezing process for an ice rink involves one to two layers a day being flooded and frozen for about five days, with the final product being only 1.5 inches thick.
