Craig at Work: KRAI and 55 Country
For 93.7 KRAI and 55 Country owner and manager Frank Hanel, it's not enough to focus on being local. As he puts it, "we super serve the community. That is really what we are all about." That philosophy has led to eight consecutive Colorado Broadcasters Radio Station of the Year awards, and a host of individual accomplishments. Playing tunes, public service announcements and advertisements are all part of the radio gig, but Hanel credits the radio station's success largely to its news focus. While many other radio stations have a one-person newsroom, KRAI and 55 Country uses three. "That is almost unheard of," Hanel said. ": We operate more like (newspapers)." Part of that local news equation is covering many high school sports live. Another factor in the station's success, Hanel said, is its definition of community. When he speaks of community, he is referring to Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco counties. "The concept has always been regionality," Hanel said. "We are Northwest Colorado's radio station. We always have been, and if I have my way, we always will be."

Ahhh the good old days. When I worked in that studio there wasn't a guest microphone and the control board was older than I was. I learned a lot of stuff from Frank and had a great time working there.
