The contest, which required no entrance fee, gave youths a chance to eventually work their way to a national competition with the winners’ names displayed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The pair scored the same number of points their first go and had to shoot another five to determine who would win the top spot in the 10- to 11-year-old age category. Parker won, advancing him to Rifle for the district challenge.

Jaime Montes hugs his father, Mario Montes, just before getting onto a shuttle Dec. 10 in Rifle. The shuttle was taking Jamie to Denver, where he would get on a plane to go to basic training. Jaime has signed a six-year contract to be an aerial gunner on a C-130 in the United States Air Force.
