Steven Charles Hafey
1941-2016
Steven Charles Hafey joined our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday December 9, 2016 peacefully at home with his wife by his side after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Fay Hafey (Short) of 54 years, his daughter Dorie Hafey, and sons Corey(Tami), Kip(Jill), Wade(Amy), 13 grandchildren, sisters Janice McCraw, Jane Ann Nettleton, Margaret Ruth Lisle, and brother Tim Hafey.
Steve was born to Chuck and Dorothy Hafey on June 7, 1941 in Grand Junction, CO. He graduated from Carbon High School in Price, UT in 1959 and attended Mesa Junior College on a track scholarship in Grand Junction. He graduated from Colorado State College (now known as University of Northern Colorado) on March 8, 1968 with a teaching degree. He then began his teaching career in Stratton, CO as a Teacher, Coach and Athletic Director; later joining the Teamsters at the Hayden Power Plant, then moving to the Craig Power Station and eventually to Trapper Mine as a Safety Manager and Personnel Manager where he retired in 2003 after 24 years.
Steve was a member of Yampa Valley Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren. He was a kind and selfless mentor, loyal, funny, caring and enthusiastic about life. He fought his illness like a true champion, never giving up and always maintaining a positive attitude. His family and friends are eternally grateful to have had Steve grace their lives. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, fly¬ tying, rafting, coaching, refereeing, and racquetball. When he wasn’t coaching or refereeing he was broadcasting (32 years) football, wrestling and basketball for the Moffat County Bulldogs. Steve was known as the “Voice of the Bulldogs.” He was involved in many community organizations, including Chairman for the United Way, Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce, Moffat County School Board member, President Craig Youth Baseball, Interim Director of the Boys and Girls Club, city league basketball, and Craig youth sports including: PeeWee Wrestling, Doak Walker Football, AAU Basketball, Little League Baseball, and Girls Youth Fast Pitch. Steve was named Colorado Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1973 for Single A. He was also recognized by the Craig Daily Press as their first ever Man of the Year in 1984. Among his many accomplishments he was most recently inducted in the Colorado Football Officials Hall of Fame.
We move forward in knowing that Steve is no longer in pain and will always be with us, by our side and in our hearts and minds guiding us. Steve is hearing, “Well done good and faithful servant.” A celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 2:00 pm at The Journey At First Baptist Church: 1150 W.
