Florence Ellen Van Tassel

Florence Ellen Prather was born on October 25, 1923, in Brighton, Colorado, the daughter of Murl and Alta (Talkington) Prather. She moved to Craig with her family when she was two years old. Florence attended school in Craig and graduated from Craig High School. She married Earl VanTassel Jr. on January 18, 1943, in Craig and they became the parents of four children. Florence worked many years for the telephone company in their business office and as an operator working her way up to chief operator. She also was a homemaker and assisted in the operation of the family ranch for years. She enjoyed her flowers, music, dancing and her sheep. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, the Moffat County Cattlewomen and the Young Farmer's and Homemakers group. Florence died on Friday January 10, 2014, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was 90. Florence is survived by her daughters Vivian Murray and Gaye (Brian) Schnackenberg both of Craig and Verla (Alan) Rossi of Mack CO; her son Gary (Valerie) VanTassel of Craig; grandchildren Debbie (Dan) Coakley, Kaby (Bruce) Rogers, Bryn VanTassel, Tory (Rachel) VanTassel, Levi (Jennie) Schnackenberg, Chelsey Schnackenberg, Jennifer (Justin) Gilbreath and Tony (Koli) Rossi; seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren and her brother Lyle (Diane) Prather of Craig. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl Van Tassel Jr., her sisters Edna and Monty and her brothers Lawrence, Kenneth and Keith. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at the Craig Christian Church with Mervin Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Craig Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the 4-H Foundation or the Rebecca Lodge both in care of Grant Mortuary.
