Howard Kling

Howard Hilbert Kling, son of Hilbert and Gladys (Hansen) Kling, was born in Augusta, Wisconsin on July 16, 1935 and passed away surrounded by his family on August 28, 2013 in Craig, Colorado following a brief ill­ness.
He spent his youth in Wisconsin with his parents, his two brothers, Gary and Jack, and his two sisters, Sharon and Kathy. He was fortunate to have his grandparents, Anna and Herbert Kling, nearby, who were always a big part of his life along with his Aunt Lorraine and Uncle Bill Korth. He followed their examples, having a tremendous influence on his own grandchildren's lives.
He graduated from Augusta High School in 1953, attended Lacrosse College and gradu­ated from the business school at the University of Wisconsin in 1958.
Howard worked in the insur­ance industry for over 40 years, beginning his career with Badger Mutual in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then Crum and Forster, in Freeport, Illinois and Denver, Colorado, and Pleasant's Insurance in Craig, Colorado.
Howard was a member of the Craig Kiwanis Club for 37 years, serving as president and vice-president, and he was involved in many projects including the Kiwanis Play and the Special Olympics. The Northwest Colorado Daily Press declared him the 1995 Man of the Year for his work with Northwest Colorado Special Olympics. He was an active member of the Lutheran Church of Grace in Craig and had been a volunteer for sever­al other organizations over the years including Moffat County Schools Advisory Committee and Vocational Committee, Community Concerts, the food bank, the library book drive, and the Fuller Center for Housing. Howard was committed to improving and supporting his community. He loved hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and watching his grandchildren's many activities.
Howard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Audrey Ann (Roberts) Kling, a daughter Ann (Nick) Charchalis of Craig, and a son Michael (Ruth) Kling, of Boise, Idaho, grandchildren Audrey Anna Charchalis, of Craig, Michael (Megan) Charchalis, of Craig, David Kling, of Corvallis, Oregon, and Angela Charchalis, of Golden, Co, his great granddaughter, Madelyn Jean Charchalis, of Craig, his brothers Gary (Doris) Kling, of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jon Kling, of Buffalo, Wyoming, his sisters Sharon Helmkamp, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kathy (Willy) Harkner, of Craig, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the fam­ily has asked that donations be made to the Kiwanis Club of Craig in care of Grant Mortuary, 621 Yampa Avenue, Craig, CO 81625.
