Anthony "Tony" R. Grajeda, of Craig, died May 28, 2013, after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer. He was 62 years old.
Tony was born July 12, 1950 in Hayden to Antonio and Emma Grajeda. When Tony was an infant, his father died, and Emma then married Jesse Mascarenas, who became the only father he knew. With Emma and Jesse's marriage, Tony received four brothers — Jay, Ernest, Clem and Michael Mascarenas — and one sister, Susie Herrera. They became one big family and lived their lives in Craig.
Tony graduated from Moffat County High School in 1969 and attended college in Lamar before he was called upon to serve his country from 1970 to 1972.
On Nov. 7, 1970, Tony married Shamra Jarrell, and they had three children. Tony raised his family in Craig. He retired from Empire Energy coal mine, and he was an international board member of the United Mine Workers of America. Tony was a great man at many things in life, the best son, brother, husband, father and grandpa anyone could ever ask for. Tony taught many people many special and unique things throughout his life. His humor and ability to make people laugh will be things people will remember most. He is a man who you look at and just smile. Tony loved to watch the Denver Broncos, whether they were winning or losing. He also spent every spare moment outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed keeping his yard work and growing huge tomato plants.
Tony's adventure in life has expired, but we all know that his next adventure already has begun, and one day, we will be with him.
Tony is survived by his wife, Shamra Grajeda; daughters Andrea Steinhaus and Stephanie Beckett (Matt); son Anthony "Tony" Grajeda (Kristin); his mother, Emma Mascarenas; brothers Jay, Clem and Michael Mascarenas; sister Susie Herrera; and grandchildren Chase Steinhaus, Jessica Steinhaus, Brayden Lemasters, Hunter Beckett, Holden Beckett, Myka Grajeda and Jesse Grajeda.
Tony was preceded in death by both of his fathers, Antonio Grajeda and Jesse Mascarenas; brother Ernest Mascarenas; and grandson Layne Grajeda.
Services were held at St. Michael Catholic Church by the Rev. Jim Fox. The Rosary was June 3, and services were held June 4, with a burial at the Craig Cemetery with military honors.
