Jonathan Zane Herod

Jonathan Zane Herod was born June 1, 1963 in Denver to James Leroy and Ruth (Hebenstreit) Herod.

The family lived in Denver then moved to Craig, where Jon attended school. He was a 1981 graduate of Moffat County High School.

Jon married Melissa Walts on Aug. 14, 1982 in Craig. They had two daughters, Jessica in 1985 and Ashley in 1987.

The family lived in Craig and Maybell, where Jon worked for Bear Valley Drilling (his family’s drilling business) for many years. He found his passion when he became an over-the-road truck driver.

In 2012 he returned to Craig and worked for Herod Industries.

Jon loved life and was very close to his family. He enjoyed being a grandfather, fishing, hunting and traveling.

He died in a work-related accident at a well site north of Craig on Thursday, Jan. 3 at the age of 49.

Jon was preceded in death by his father, James (Jim), and daughter, Madison. He is survived by his daughters, Jessica Herod and her companion Jason Baker, of Pampa, Texas; and Ashley Herod, her fiancé, Trent Durham, and their son, Zane, of Craig; his mother, Ruth; his brother, Joe, and his wife, Lila; his nephew, Casey, and his companion, Cammie Haskins; his niece, Chelsey Hammer, her husband, Matt, and their daughter, Kiley; his former wife, Missy Arnett, and her children, Bailey and Jordan Lucke, of Pensacola, Fla.; his fiancé, Crystal Rogerson, her daughter, Sunny White, Sunny's husband, Josh, and their daughter, Ari, all of Craig.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services took place Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Craig with Charles Beaver officiating. Interment of the cremated remains followed in Craig Cemetery.

Memorial Donations may be made in care of Yampa Valley Bank in trust for his daughters.
