Larry Barrailler, our loving father, grandfather, brother and friend, died Friday, March 9, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. At the time of his death, he resided in Oak Harbor, Wash.
Larry was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Ottawa, Kan., to Margaret (O'Day) Glaser and Merle Glaser.
His parents divorced and he moved to Aspen with his mom and sister in 1946. Larry was adopted into the Barrailler family when his mom married Adolph Barrailler in the late 1940s.
Larry had many jobs as a boy and teen growing up in the Aspen community. He worked for Aspen Mountain Ski Corp for many of those years.
He graduated from Aspen High School in 1959 and attended Sterling Junior College on a football scholarship. In 1964, he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Comstock LLD as an electrician.
After his tour of duty, he married Darlene (MacAdam) Barrailler, of Oshkosh, Wisc. They had three sons: Richard, Jim and Ben. Larry and Darlene later divorced.
After moving back to Colorado in the 1970s, Larry enjoyed a life of hunting, four-wheeling, and enjoying his life surrounded by friends and family.
He worked for the Anshutz Coal Company in Carbondale. He then went into the water well drilling business with his brother-in-law in the Silt/Glenwood Springs area.
By the late 1980s, Larry began working for the federal government as an electrician. This work took him to Bremerton, Wash., and Brush, and Seminole Dam in Wyoming. He then settled down in Craig, where he retired in 2006.
Larry relocated to Oak Harbor, Wash., in 2010, to be near his son, Jim, and his grandchildren.
At the end of his battle with cancer, he was lovingly cared for by his son, Jim, ex-wife Darlene, and her husband (Larry's friend), Gerry.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Peggy) Ferguson; father Merle Glaser; stepfather Adolph Barrailler; sons Richard and Ben; and daughter-in-law (wife of Jim), Jill Barrailler.
Survivors include his son, Jim, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; sisters Patricia (Ralph) Zordell, of Franklin Grove, Ill., Maria (Darrell) Sorensen, of Silt, and Jean (Allen) Lambert, of Crown City, Ohio; granddaughters Brianna and Katie; and grandson Matt Barrailler. Also included are his many loving friends scattered throughout Colorado, Wisconsin and Washington, most especially his very close friends Rich and Jan Hansen, of Craig, and their family.
His wonderful spirit, generous heart, keen sense of humor, thoughtful nature and that sparkle in his eyes will be sorely missed by all who loved him.
There will be no funeral services in honor of his request. A wake is planned for later this year in Craig.
