Mary M. “Grammy-Grammacia” Garcia was born July 7, 1924, in Canjilon, N.M., the daughter of Jose Maria Montano and Liberita Martinez. She was raised in Canjilon.
Mary was married to Max Garcia on Dec. 27, 1944, in Parkview, N.M. They became the parents of nine children and made their home in New Mexico until 1955, when they moved to Craig.
Mary enjoyed sewing and watching soap operas and “Wheel of Fortune.” She was a faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Craig.
She died April 24, 2013, at her home. She was 88.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Connie Combs and her husband, Butch, Irene Moralez, Maxine Monger and her husband, Jerry, and Lee DeSpain and her husband, John, all of Craig, and Elsie Garcia, of Twin Falls, Idaho; her sons, Jake Garcia and wife, Sylvia, of Craig, Richard Garcia and wife, Bobbi, of Denver, and Abel Garcia, of Vancouver, Wash.; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister, Esteema Madrid, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and her brother, Joe Monano and wife, Gaylene, of Grand Junction.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Liberita Montano; her husband, Max; daughter Pauline Chapman; two grandchildren; and two sons-in-law.
A funeral service was April 29, 2013, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Fr. James Fox officiating. Interment followed in the Craig Cemetery, where she was laid to rest next to her husband. The Rosary was recited the previous evening at the Grant Mortuary Chapel led by Fr. Geronimo Gonzalez.
