March 21, 1923 - January 8, 2013
Jane Ellis Weston, of Toponas, passed away Jan. 8, 2013. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil, in 2008 and grandson Nicholas Rocco Lombardi in 1993. She is survived by her son Terry, of Steamboat Springs; daughters Cathy Courtney (Ray), of Centennial, Patty Murray (Bill), of Lake Bluff, Ill., Mary Jane Logan (Bob), of Yampa, and Jeanie Lombardi (Rocco), of Yampa; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Jane’s only sibling, Susan Ellis Pellini, of Granby, preceded her in death in 2010.
Jane was born March 21, 1923, in Creston, Iowa, the first of two daughters to Dale and Miriam Ellis. After graduating from high school in 1941, she attended the University of Nebraska briefly before transferring and graduating from the University of Colorado in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science in business. Jane was affiliated with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and professional sorority Beta Sigma. She worked summers for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in Chicago. While in Chicago, at the request of her father, Cecil Weston — a Griswold, Iowa, high school classmate — chaperoned Jane before he entered the Army Air Corps in 1942. Cecil and Jane were married Sept. 28, 1945, in Los Angeles while Cecil still was in the service.
Longtime residents of Routt County, Cecil and Jane moved to Toponas in September 1949, when they purchased and operated the People’s Store in Toponas until 1979. The store’s motto was, “If we don’t have it, you don’t want it.” Cecil and Jane also were Conoco Oil agents for South Routt County for many years. Cecil and Jane sold the store in 1979 and started Weston Industries, a petroleum products transportation business.
Jane was an active parishioner of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek and served on the Altar and Rosary Society since 1949 as a member of the Financial Council and, occasionally, as a substitute organist. She was an active member of the Toponas Community Club and Grand Slammer Bridge Club. Jane was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 189 Bird-howe in Yampa. She was assistant treasurer of the Routt County Foundation for Senior Citizens for many years and served on the Yampa Valley Medical Center board of trustees from 1993 to 2000.
Jane will be missed greatly by her family, friends and the community but was welcomed warmly by Cecil and the good Lord.
Memorial donations can be made in Jane's name and sent to the Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley, P.O. Box 883415, Steamboat Springs, CO 80488.
