Robert "Bob" Slaight
April 23, 1926 - September 11, 2012
Robert Slaight was born to Ralph Slaight and Beth Shields Slaight on their Willow Creek homestead in the shadows of Bakers Peak on April 23, 1926. Dr. Noyes from Dixon WY delivered him.
Robert, better known as "Bob" to all, passed away at his home Sept. 11, 2012, with family by his side.
Bob attended grade school at Fortification Creek school. He graduated in 1946 from Craig High School, living with his grandparents until his folks moved to Craig.
While in high school Bob started working for Pete and Hazel Sheley in a grocery store. Bob was too young to drive so Hazel would drive him around town to deliver groceries.
In June of 1946, Bob joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. He returned home in October of 1947.
In 1950 Bob was called back to serve his country as a reservist stationed in Japan. He returned home October 1951.
May 1, 1949, he married Bernice Baalhorn in Steamboat Springs. They were married just over 63 years. From the union two sons were born: Doug in 1954 and Darrell in 1957.
Pete Sheley had purchased a furniture store and hired Bob to work for them again in 1947 after he had returned from Korea. In 1954 Bill and Marcheta Lockhart bought the furniture store and Bob continued to work for them until he retired in March 1989.
He then worked part time at the furniture store spending more than 43 years selling furniture to households throughout Northwest Colorado and Southwest Wyoming.
Bob was the last surviving charter member of the Cedar Mountain Lions Club. Bob enjoyed being a Lion and helping people in the Craig area with club activities. He enjoyed the lifelong friendships he made with fellow Lions.
Bob also loved to hunt, fish and camp, teaching his sons and grandchildren how to sneak up on fish in high mountain streams and how to take care of what was harvested. He spent his entire life in Northwestern Colorado.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a great grandson, Kolby.
Bob is survived by his wife, Bernice; sons Doug and Darrell; daughters-in-law Cindy and Vicky; grandchildren Joshua, Jamie, Brian and Tyler; great grandchildren Brandon, Felicia, Jason, Teven, Kaleb and Lucas; and sisters Dorothy Forshee, of Craig, and Ida May Guptill, of Grand Junction.
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scatted at a later date.
