Clyde Robert Stehle
Clyde Robert Stehle was born on Oct. 30, 1933, northwest of Craig at Cedar Mountain.
He was the youngest of four sons born to Clifford and Lovisa Stehle. His brothers included Birney “Bud” Stehle, Jack Stehle and Ervin “Ervie” Stehle.
He attended grade school at East Cedar Mountain School and graduated from Moffat County High School with the class of 1951.
Clyde married Judith Ann Grove on April 26, 1952. To this union six children where born: Kim, Chris, Carol Ann, Janet, Daniel and Beth.
After sixteen years of marriage Clyde and Judith Divorced.
On December 30, 1968, Clyde married Flora Pettry. Clyde welcomed becoming the step Dad to Laura and Brian Smith.
A baby girl, LaVan was born to this union. They became one big “Brady Bunch” family.
Clyde, with the help of his brothers, took over the family farm at the age of sixteen when his father passed away. Clyde was always a good provider for his family and worked numerous jobs.
In the early years, the family traveled in the winter to find work. As Clyde said, those were the days when “you couldn’t buy a job in Craig”.
He did everything from rough necking in the bayous of Louisiana to farm work in Mesa,Ariz. One winter they went to Abilene, Texas, with the Lester Cox family to find work.
He also worked fro the Moffat County Road and Bridge Department for a short time.
He added 150 head of sheep and some heifers to the family farming operation. A short time later he went to work fulltime for the Greeley Gas Company.
All the “little Stehles” and their mother worked hard to help him with the lambing, haying and field work. He left Greeley Gas Company after 18 years and joined his brother Ervin fulltime in his farming operation.
At the height of their farming career they farmed 12,000 acres.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a master of both. He and Flora spent many winters down in south Texas fishing and hunting. He loved catching the big red fish out in the flats of the Gulf of Mexico.
He also loved to play cards including poker and 500, and many nights were spent gathered around the dining room table playing cards with family and friends.
His many kids will miss his humor, his positive outlook on life and his great jokes.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Flora Stehle; his parents, Clifford Stehle and Lovisa Stehle Wick; his brothers, Birney, Jack, and Ervin; his son, Chris; and his son-in-law, Joseph Koonce.
He is survived by sons Kim Stehle, Daniel (Shirley) Stehle and Brian (Jeanine Vallejos) Smith; daughters Carol Ann (Mike) Taylor, Laura Smith, Janet (Bill) Leonard, Beth Koonce and LaVan (Dan Madden) Stehle. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Journey First Baptist Church on Aug. 16, 2012. Interment followed at the Craig Cemetery.
