Janet Eberle, of Fort Morgan, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at Valley View Villa. She was 101.
Born Feb. 11, 1911, at home in Kersey to Bill and Grace (Harris) Mortimer, she moved with her family to Moffat County in 1918 to homestead north of Craig on Fortification Creek.
She would later chronicle her family's life in a book, “We Homesteaded.”
Eberle was the spelling bee champion in the eighth grade and went on to the state contest in Denver in 1925.
She graduated from Craig High School in 1929 and Colorado Teachers College in Greeley in 1933 with a bachelor's degree and a lifetime teaching certificate.
While working toward her degree and until 1939 she taught in numerous rural schools, including Central Fortification No. 36, Williams No. 13, Round Bottom No. 13, Hamilton No. 10, and Axial No. 11.
In 1938, she married Ernest Eberle. They lived in Hamilton until 1963.
Janet lived near and in Craig until moving to Fort Morgan in 2008 where she resided in Bee Hive Assisted Living and Valley View Villa.
She served on the Hamilton School Board, as an election clerk, and was Moffat County superintendent of schools for two terms starting in 1962. She worked in the Moffat County clerk's office until retiring in 1981.
She was also a Home Extension Club member and 4-H leader and chaperone.
In retirement, Eberle volunteered at The Memorial Hospital and the Museum of Northwest Colorado as a docent. She enjoyed gardening, keeping a daily diary of her life, and interacting with her friends.
She traveled extensively in 49 states, Canada, and Mexico.
She is survived by sons Mike Eberle, of Craig, and Jim Eberle and wife Nancy, of Fort Morgan; grandchildren Brian Eberle, of Las Vegas, and Kristi Baltazar, of Greeley; and great-grandchildren Courtney and Ryan Baltazar, of Greeley, and Chase Eberle, of Las Vegas.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Grant Mortuary in Craig.
