1936 - April 4, 2012
Kenneth B. Poirier, Jr., died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, in Littleton. He was 76.
Ken was born March 12, 1936, in St Paul, Minn., to Mary Ada and Kenneth Poirier, Sr.
He married Marcia Tucker on Oct. 23, 1982, and they lived in Craig until retirement took them to Grand Junction.
After five years in Grand Junction, they moved to Highlands Ranch to be closer to family and the University of Colorado Hospital.
Before meeting Marcia, Ken was raised in Faribault, Minn., where he went to Bethlehem Academy, graduating in 1954.
He continued his education at the Dunwoody Institute of Technology in Minneapolis, where he received his degree in radio communications. He went on to the University of Southern Colorado for an additional degree in mass communications.
Throughout his life, Ken worked as a DJ in Minnesota and Colorado, in radio advertising, as an anchorman for Channel 11 in Colorado Springs, manager for KCSJ in Pueblo and general manager of KRAI in Craig.
His declining health required he leave the pressure of the radio station, and he went to work at Colowyo Coal Co.
Marcia and Ken were also the founders and operators of Hems and Hers in Craig for 19 years.
He retired from Colowyo in 1991, while he awaited a heart transplant.
He received a new heart on his 56th birthday and recently celebrated his 20-year transplant anniversary.
To say Ken was a golf fanatic was something of an understatement. He and Marcia spent many summer days at Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig and he enjoyed teaching his daughters (and others) the game.
When he and Marcia were not at the golf course, they might be found traveling with friends or family.
On many occasions, Ken selected his vacation destination based on the local golf course.
Ken was also a sports enthusiast. He enjoyed nature, photography and was very creative.
Ken was a loving husband, father and friend who could always be counted on for a witty comment followed by a smile.
