William Gordon Peters, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., was born May 9, 1937. He died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Peters, of 50 years; and children Stephen Peters, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Victoria S. Magaldi, of Jupiter, Fla., and Andrea M. Peters, of New Preston, Conn.; brothers Ronald Peters, of Longmont, and Larry Peters, of Spokane, Wash.; and grandchildren Dylan Magaldi, of Jupiter, Fla., Victoria M. Magaldi, of Jupiter, Fla., Kellan Rickoff, of New Preston, Conn., and Avery Rickoff, of New Preston, Conn.
Gordon was born in Delta. He grew up in Valentine, Neb., and graduated high school from Valentine High School.
He then attended and graduated, with a master’s degree in engineering, from the Colorado School of Mines. He was also second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
He opened the world’s largest coal mine (at the time), and was well respected in the mining world.
He and his family lived in Africa, Missouri, Arkansas, Thailand, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming, Barranquilla, Colombia S.A., Colorado, Alaska, Wyoming (again), Colorado (again) and finally Florida, where Gordon retired to raise and judge orchids and enjoy time with his family.
He was an international orchid judge and collector of many unusual orchids, trees and plants. He was very respected and sought after in the orchid world. He was a man of integrity and character.
A memorial service was Saturday Aug. 20, 2011 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jupiter, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, in his name.
