Carol was born to Garner and Cleota Hutchins, in Mars Hill, N.C., on Oct. 3, 1928.
She grew up in Mars Hill, a small college town, and her family ran a café when she was in high school and college.
Carol graduated from Mars Hill High School and got a business degree from Mars Hill Junior College.
She met Gus Rickman while working in her uncle’s café, and Gus was a meat cutter in a neighborhood grocery store. They married in February 1950.
The family came to Hayden in January 1964 so Gus could work on the power plants being constructed in Hayden and Craig. It didn’t take long for Hayden to become “home.”
Carol enjoyed being a homemaker, and she always made you feel welcome when you were in her home.
Gus preceded her in death in April 1999. After, Carol moved back to Hayden from Grand Junction, she worked at the information desk for the Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce at the Yampa Valley Regional Airport.
Carol moved to the Doak Walker Care Center after an illness prevented her from living alone. She was there over three years. She made many friends of the staff and residents and enjoyed being a part of life in the center. She shared recipes and her love of cooking with the kitchen staff and took many of the “girls” who were her caregivers under her wing.
Carol was devoted to her family, she spoke daily to her sister in North Carolina and enjoyed the visits from her children and grandchildren, often going to lunch or a movie or having a picnic in her room.
A memorial service was held on May 9, 2011, at the Hayden Congregational Church, with the Rev. Bill Iammatteo-Code and Pastor Janet Babish officiating with Theresa Stivers as pianist.
Carol was a member of the Hayden Congregational Church, the Women’s Fellowship and the Hayden Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
