A memorial service for John A. Montoya, 73, was Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Bethel Baptist Church in Torrington, Wyo., with Pastor Ron Martin officiating. Ashes were interred in the Fort Laramie Cemetery.
Montoya died Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Community Hospital in Torrington. A memorial fund has been established to the family to help with funeral expenses.
Montoya was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Hot Sulphur Springs. He is the son of Antonio and Antonia Montoya.
He graduated from Moffat County High School in 1956.
He worked for Martin Marietta before being drafted into the U.S. Army for the Korean War.
He married Barbara Renzelman in 1961 and they were later divorced.
After his discharge from the Army, Montoya worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad, where he served in many capacities. He retired as an electrician.
Montoya married Charlotte Gorham on March 14, 2008, in Gering, Neb.
After retirement, he worked summers at Fort Laramie for the National Park Service.
Montoya is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Fort Laramie; daughter Marlea Guzman and her husband, Jose, of California; son Shawn Montoya, of Fort Collins; grandchildren Mike and Robin; sisters Rose Hutton and her husband, Leslie, of Craig, and Mira Muirhead and her husband, Raymond, of Tampa, Fla.; sister-in-law Mary Jane Montoya, of Craig; nieces and nephews Vicki (Thomas) Duncan, Danny Hutton, Michelle Favorel, Mark (Shelly) Montoya, Donny Montoya, Debbie (Scott) Momb, Dawn Cavaliere, Mary Rose (Jon) Thompson and Marie (John) Sorenson; and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Tony Montoya; sister Lucille DePina; and nephew Doug Muirhead.
