Vern T. Herbert, a longtime resident of Craig, died on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at The Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was 93.
Vern was born in Pagoda on May 7, 1918, the son of Joseph and Emma (Hatch) Herbert. He was raised and attended school in Craig.
In his early years, Vern worked in various restaurants in the area. He then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 until 1945. He married Vera Noler on Sept. 22, 1946, in Cordova, Neb. They made their home in Craig and owned and operated a service station for many years. He and Vera spent the winters in Arizona following retirement.
Vern enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes, cutting wood and spending time at their cabin at Hahn’s Peak. He was also known for the jeep he built from scratch.
Vern was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Craig, having been baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cordova, Neb.
He is survived by his wife, Vera of Craig; his daughters, Janet Vogt of Grand Junction and Judy (Jerry) Downing of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Daniel Downing and his partner Ken Mathis of Denver and Aaron (Mandy) Vogt of Severance; his brother, Robert Shutt of Dove Creek; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Jo; his parents; his sisters, Ethel and Ruth; his brothers. Joe, Norman, Ron and Byron; and son-in-law, Marc Vogt.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial services were held on Monday, July 11, 2011, at Faith Lutheran Church, with Pastor John Turner officiating. Nedra Porach was the soloist and sang “The Lord’s Prayer” accompanied on the organ by Wendy Lankister. Vern’s cremains were interred in the Craig Cemetery prior to the service, with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 and American Legion Post 62.
