Dora Dalton

Dora Elizabeth Dalton was born May 11, 1924, in Edinburg, Ill., to Sallie Gladys Tucker and Herschel Perry Dennison. She died Oct. 26, 2010, in Craig.
She was the second of nine children born to the family.
Dora’s father was a hired farmhand, so the family moved often and lived in many different areas throughout central Illinois. She loved to share stories of where she grew up and the adventures they had.
Dora was working for Allis Chalmers in Springfield, Ill., in the bakery department when she met her husband, Gilbert Franklin Dalton.
Dora and Gilbert were married Aug. 13, 1949. This union was joined by three children: Roy Leo, Ray Lee and Jay Leon.
As the family was being raised, Dora made sure they did a lot of traveling throughout the United States. They visited all but 13 states camping. On these trips, they rarely had an agenda — they just drove and stopped where something looked interesting.
Dora loved to cook, sew and knit, and made many wonderful creations for her family and friends.
Dora joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 1954. She served in many callings in the church in primary and relief society. She loved being a visiting teacher and took her responsibility very seriously.
She loved the Lord and the sisters she served.
Dora received her temple endowments at the Denver Temple in 1988.
Her life was fulfilled when she finally became a grandmother. She was living in Illinois at the time, but when she met her grandson, Jay David, she moved to Steamboat Springs to be part of his life.
As this family grew, Dora was a daily part of their lives. She was an avid reader and instilled a love for reading in each one of her grandchildren. She took them to the library each week to check out books, and spent many hours reading to them.
As they became old enough, she made sure they all had a library card. Wherever the grandchildren were, she was not far away, helping them build snowmen, sand castles or pushing the swing.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents, Sallie Gladys and Herschel Perry Dennison; brothers Herschel “Big Boy” Raymond and Bill; sister Bonnie Mae Dennison; husband Gilbert Franklin Dalton; and son Jay Leon.
She is survived by her sons, Roy and his wife, Robin, of Rocky Mount, Va., and Ray, of Buffalo, N.Y.; daughter-in-law Bonnie (Jay); and grandchildren Jay David, Joshua Malachi, J’Lea Rene and Jeremy Hogan Dalton, all of Craig.
Dora also has two step-grandchildren, Colin and Cathy Tomlison, of Virginia, and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Alexis, of Virginia.
Dora also has two surviving sisters, Millie Dennison, of Springfield, Ill., and Eunice January, Divernon, Ill.; brothers Robert and his wife, Pat, and Melvin, of Springfield, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
