Claudia was born Nov. 11, 1933, in Craig, the daughter of Russel Ellis and Zelma (Zimmerman) Ellis. Claudia graduated as valedictorian of her class at Baggs (Wyo.) High School in 1952.
On June 15, 1952, Claudia married Alan Herold, of Baggs, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. In January 1953, the couple joined a delegation from the University of Wyoming’s College of Agriculture to set up an agricultural program in Kabul, Afghanistan.
While in Kabul, the couple saw the births of their three children, Alan, Susan and John. Upon their return to the United States in 1957, two more daughters, Bonnie and Patricia, were born in Craig. The family resided in Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyo., while raising their children.
Claudia was an avid gardener, both floral and vegetable, while instructing her daughters on home beautification and food preservation for the family. Claudia then continued her education at the University of Wyoming and received her bachelor’s degree in social work in 1981. Upon her graduation, Claudia worked for the State of Wyoming in Cheyenne and Riverton.
In 1983, Claudia returned to Craig and worked at Correctional Alternative Placement Services.
Claudia continued her love of gardening and was proud to be chosen as “Yard of the Week.”
She was willing to share her knowledge and plants with others in her neighborhood. Claudia was a gifted artisan in many other areas, including watercolors, photography, drawing, flower arrangement, drying and potpourri.
Claudia was a strong advocate to her children and grandchildren letting them know that, “You can achieve anything you set your mind to.” She instilled a strong sense of worth and independence to her family.
