Edward Melvin Doak

Edward Melvin Doak, 88, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at his home in Glenwood Springs, surrounded by his family.
Ed was born Feb. 11, 1922, in Walworth, Neb., to Ernest Maxwell Doak and Dora Lula Mapel. He was raised in Craig.
Ed graduated from Colorado A&M, now Colorado State University. He served in the South Pacific for four years during World War II, and was twice awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.
He was married to Genevieve Shafto on Sept. 14, 1947, in Craig.
Ed was employed at lumberyards in Rifle, Glenwood Springs and Eagle for 47 years, and was active in the Boys Scouts, Garfield County Fair Board, Rifle Lions Club and Rifle Chamber of Commerce.
Ed is survived by his wife, Genevieve Doak, of Glenwood Springs; son Max Doak, of Abiquiu, N.M.; daughters Susan Doak Benson, of Windsor, Libby Doak, of Cedaredge, and Mary Lou “Lulu” Doak, of Grand Junction. He is also survived by sister Ella Murphy, of Craig.
Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Shary Doak, his parents, four sisters and a brother.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at Farnum Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs.
A military honors ceremony took place Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at the Western Colorado Veterans Cemetery in Grand Junction.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Shary Doak Memorial Scholarship Fund at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Dr., Durango, CO, 81301-3999.
