Verna Kendall Freier Payne, 63, of Atomic City, Idaho, died July 25, 2009 at her home.
She was born Dec. 27, 1945, in Bismarck, N.D., to Allen Dee and Stella Marie Larsen Kendall. She attended school in Hazelton, N.D.
On March 8, 1965, she married James Freier. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1990. She then married Dwain Payne on April 11, 1992, in Elko, Nev.
While married to James, they lived in Idaho, Montana and Washington, before settling in Craig. After her marriage to Dwain, they moved back to Idaho and had lived in Atomic City since 2004, when they bought the Atomic City Bar & Store.
Verna was a member of the Methodist Church.
She was a trained certified nurse assistant in Colorado. She worked at Kings in Blackfoot, where she was known as the "Toy Lady" and owned the Atomic City Bar and Store.
Verna enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking road trips on the motorcycle.
She is survived by her husband, of 17 years, Dwain Payne, of Atomic City; daughters Denise Mead, of Pocatello, Idaho, and Dawn (John) Pitha, of New Jersey; sister Margie Nieland, of Bismarck, N.D.; grandchildren Amanda and Carl Mead, of Craig, and Emily and Karla Pitha, of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edward and Roger Kendall and twin sister Verlyn Bauer.
Cremation services will be under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, Idaho. A memorial gathering is at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Atomic City Bar and Store.
