Betty M. Hughes, 87, of Craig, formerly of Bath, N.Y., died Oct. 15, 2009, at The Memorial Hospital. Betty was the wife of the late Maurice (Bill) Hughes, who died Dec. 9, 2001.
Betty was born in Flicksville, Pa., on July 2, 1922, the daughter of the late Oliver and Mary (Pensyl) Jennings. Betty was a New York State Telephone operator, and later, she and Bill owned and operated Waneta Inn on Waneta Lake in Wayne, N.Y., for 25 years.
She is survived by daughters Joan (Bill) Kleckler, of Craig; Judith (James) Amato, of Valrico, Fla.; five grandchildren Betty (Roger) Miesner, of Craig; William Schaefer, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Joseph (Karen) Amato, of East Quoque, N.Y.; James (Rosemarie) Amato, of North Babylon, N.Y.; Kevin (Carrie) Kleckler, of Hayden; 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister Shirley (Ed) Klemka, of Easton, Pa.; and brother Robert (Linda) Jennings, of Bangor, Pa.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister and two brothers.
Betty was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was celebrated Oct. 18 with grandson Kevin Kleckler officiating. Granddaughter Carrie Kleckler sang “Amazing Grace,” “Untitled Hymn” and “I Hope You Dance.” Interment was Oct. 19, at Craig Cemetery.
