1910 - September 22, 2008
Shirley Gibson Sowards, of Grand Junction and formerly of Rangely, Craig and Torrington, Wyo., died Sept. 22, 2008.
He was born Feb. 1, 1910, to Nelson and Mary Sowards in Vernal, Utah. After high school graduation, he attended the university in Salt Lake City.
Shirley served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII with a radio communications unit in both Pearl Harbor and Guam.
After returning home, he worked a short time in the forest above Vernal, where he developed his lifelong love of the outdoors, camping and fishing. He worked for Amoco from the late 1940s until he retired in 1972 and moved to Grand Junction, where he and his wife, Jean, built their own home.
Shirley was the loving husband of the late Jean Sowards; devoted father of Barbara English; and two sons, Lloyd and Harold, who predeceased him; proud and loving grandfather of Mike, Susan, Kevin, Shaun, Kimberly and the late Scott Eddy. He also had five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the cemetery in Craig. Callahan-Edfast Mortuary handled the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's name may be made to the American Heart Association.
