Doris "Jean" Bemis
September 28, 1932 - September 6, 2008
Doris "Jean" Bemis was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Steamboat Springs to George "Murphy" Combs and Thelma Seline Salisbury. She was raised and attended school in Steamboat Springs, and after her high school graduation, she married her first husband, Dallas F. "Rudy" Rudell.
To this union two children were born, Michael and Cindy. Jean and Dallas later divorced.
Jean continued to live and work in Steamboat Springs until 1965, when she married Jervis C. Bemis and moved to Yampa. They had a son, Kelly Bemis. Jean moved to Craig after Jervis' death in 1988.
She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting, music, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. In recent years, her biggest joy came from playing bingo with her friends, especially Ruby Wooden, at the VFW and the Elks Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Duane Combs; two sons, Michael Rudell and Kelly Bemis; and her second husband, Jervis C. Bemis.
She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Smith of Craig; a brother, Butch (Connie) Combs, of Craig; grandchildren Julie (Ben) Hough of Fort Worth, Texas, Jaime Smith and Toby Cotton of Clifton, Jenny Smith of Craig, and Dustin Harrison of Craig; great-grandchildren Torre, Daniel, Sophie and Raya; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services were held Sept. 10, 2008, at Grant Mortuary in Craig with Steve Wallace officiating. Joyce Miller sang "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagles' Wings," accompanied by Roberta Charles. Honorary pallbearers were Butch Combs, Tom Cramer, Jimmy Hunter, Ben Hough, Dan Coffey, Toby Cotton, Dustin Harrison and "all Jean's many friends."
