William A. Murphy
August 26, 1928 - December 16, 2007
William A. Murphy was born in Salandt Memorial Hospital on Aug. 26, 1928. He died Dec. 16, 2007.
His family homesteaded north of Hayden. He attended many schools up there.
They moved to Hayden for a while, then moved to the old place down on the ranch outside of Hayden, before his folks bought a piece of land west of Hayden.
He attended school in Hayden. In the spring, he stayed home from school to help with the farming. Later, when he did start school, he had to make up what he missed. After graduation, he entered the Army in 1950.
He was an intelligent officer and spent most of his time in Italy and Germany. In Italy, the soldiers passed by on the train and the ladies stood alongside with brooms to keep them from getting the grapes that grew along the railroad tracks. After returning from the military service, he went back to work on the farm. He leveled all the river bottoms where all the lush hay is grown.
He married Shirley M. Doolin on May 15, 1953. To that union there were born five children: Sherry L. Murphy, Michael D. Murphy, Patty M. Murphy, Cindy J. Murphy and Gerald R. Murphy.
Bill quit farming and went to work for Charly and C.D. Johnson in 1972. He retired in 1997.
He loved hunting, fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Sherry Murphy Hunter; son Gerald R. Murphy; grandsons Dwayne L. Montieth and baby Rick Leblanc; his dad and mother, Homer and Mary Murphy; sisters Betty Murphy, Kathy Healy and Mary Alice Bridge; and brothers Homer Murphy, Glen Murphy and Lawrence Murphy.
His is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 54 years, son Michael D. Murphy and Diana Patricia, Dan Montieth, Cindy Murphy, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
