Laurelen S. Flies 1928 - 2008 Craig
Laurelen S. “Lornie” Flies died March 3, 2008, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig after a brief illness. She was 79.
Lornie was born Aug. 5, 1928, in Rifle, the daughter of Frank and Lyra (Robertson) Sanborn.
She lived in various places during her childhood, including Alamosa and Carbondale, where she graduated from high school. Lornie attended Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley and received her teaching degree in home economics.
Lornie married Galord L. Flies on May 19, 1951, in Craig. After their marriage, they lived in Denver for two years and then returned to Craig, where they raised their family and have resided since then.
Lornie taught home economics for the Moffat County School District for 21 years and, near the end of her career, also taught computer science. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, working with the local 4-H groups and for many years assisted with the Craig summer swim team.
She is survived by her husband, Galord Flies, of Craig; daughter Lyra Kay McMillian of Fort Collins; sons Warren and his wife, Viki Flies, of Mesa, Ariz., Larry Flies of Dallas, Texas, and Kenneth and his wife, Wilma Flies, of Fruita; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and her brother George and his wife, Karen Sanborn, of Fairplay.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lyra Sanborn, and her brother William.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be held at a later date.
