Jane Caroline Pritchett Balleck 1926 - 2008
Jane Caroline Pritchett Balleck was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Lithonia, Ga., to Arthur William Pritchett and Caroline Eugenia Merriman. Jane died July 13, 2008, after a brief illness. After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Northwestern States from 1947 to 1948, she moved to Denver where she met Andrew Balleck. Jane and Andrew were married Sept. 15, 1950 and five children were born into the union: Drew Patrick, Brenda Kay, William Daniel, Judith Jane and Barry James. Jane and Andrew made their home in Craig and were happily married until Andrew's death in 1993.
Jane was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) and was among the first members of the Church to settle in the Craig area. She served in various church capacities, including Relief Society President, Primary President, Sunday School Teacher and Seminary Teacher. Jane helped organize the Democratic Party in Moffat County and served several years as the county chairwoman for the party. Jane loved politics and loved engaging in conversations with both those who shared her Democratic point of view and those who opposed them. Jane was an avid reader and would often read dozens of books within a calendar year. She was well-read in current events and loved to share her opinions on the state of the world with those whom she had contact with.
Among Jane's greatest joys was her yard and garden. She loved flowers, and her yard was often a showcase admired in the community. Even after selling her home in 2005, Jane maintained her beautiful yard at her new address and loved to see her flowers bloom during the course of the year. Jane loved the change of seasons in Colorado, and even after her health deteriorated, she loved to sit on her deck during the cool summer evenings of Craig. When she was able, Jane loved to visit with others and could often be found at the nursing home visiting friends and family members.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, and her children William Daniel and Brenda Kay. She is survived by her sons Drew and Barry, daughter, Judith, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her sister, Patricia Milstead of Ohio also survives as well as many nieces and nephews.
