Madge Inez Rankin died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Village in Winfield, Kan. She was 96 years of age and the mother of Elaine (Rankin) Henderson who taught social studies in Craig Middle School from 1977 until 1991.
Madge was born Jan. 24, 1912, on a farm north of Longton to Bruce Henry and Oma (Flesher) Crowell. She moved with her family to Parker, S.D., at an early age and attended school in the Parker community.
Madge lived in Mississippi before returning to Kansas, where she lived in the Oak Valley area. On May 25, 1934, she married Horace Cline "Pony" Rankin in Elk City, Kan., and to this union was born a daughter, Elaine, and two sons, Roger and Richard. They operated a ranch near Elk City for several years before moving to a ranch north of Busby, Kan. Her husband, Pony, preceded her in death March 21, 1961. Madge moved into Longton in 1965 and made her home there until entering Good Samaritan in 2005.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served many years as a 4-H leader. Madge attended the Christian Community Church of Longton, Kan.
She is survived by her sons, Roger Rankin and Richard Rankin, both of Longton, Kan.; her daughter, Elaine Rankin of Winfield; her brother, Glen Crowell, of Independence, Kan.; her sister, Ruth Ballenger of Humboldt, Kan., eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 at the Christian Community Church of Longton with Pastor Dave Sanchez and Mike Dershem officiating. Interment will be at the Longton Cemetery in Longton, Kan.
Memorials have been established with the Longton Historical Society, Longton Christian Community Church, Winfield Public Library and the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.
