1942 - March 31, 2008
Jessie D. "Doc" Smith was born May 7, 1942, in Littlefield, Texas, to Rector Oliver and Rachel Evidine Smith. He was one of seven children. He passed away peacefully at the age of 65 at his home west of Craig on March 31, 2008, after months of illness.
Jessie, also called JD, spent his early childhood in Littlefield until his family moved to Clovis, N.M., and later Farmington, where he graduated from Farmington High School on June 1, 1960. In 1967, he received his chiropractic license (D.C.) after 6 years of school.
Jessie was married three times: first to Ann Mullens, then Linda Mace, and lastly to Linda Sue Rhoades. All three marriages ended in divorce. Jessie had two children, Michelle and Matthew Lee.
In January 1980, Jessie moved with his infant son, Matt, to Craig where Jessie opened a chiropractic practice. He worked in this field until his retirement in 2006. As a single father, Jessie enjoyed a special relationship with his only son. The two of them were very close, and Jessie was a devoted and wonderful dad. Jessie enjoyed fishing anytime and everywhere, and little Matt always was along with him to catch "the big one." JD also enjoyed working on cars, especially his Mustangs, a pastime which he passed on to his son.
With his ready laugh and easygoing ways, Jessie formed many close friendships during his 26 years in Craig. He was a regular in later years at Craig's McDonald's restaurant, where he and his buddies met every morning to drink coffee and solve all the local and world problems. JD always will be remembered as generous and especially caring, not only to his son, but to his many patients. He especially will be missed by his son, Matt, who always will remember JD as a devoted dad and a great best friend.
Jessie is survived by his son, Matthew Lee Smith, of Craig, and by four brothers, one sister and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother.
