Guy Thomas Shefstead, 80, died March 24, 2008, at Sandrock Ridge Care and Rehab in Craig, where he had been a resident following a stay in The Memorial Hospital. He fought cancer for more than a year.
Guy was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Craig to Guy O. and Mary E. (Cheatham) Shefstead. He was the second of two sons.
Guy lived in Craig all his life. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Colorado and Mesa State College. He served two years in the U.S. Army.
In his younger years, he helped his father on the farm and ranch and with custom haying. He worked for Texaco and at Union Carbide's uranium mine near Maybell. Guy then farmed for several years and finally entered the family minerals business with his brother, Holmes, and continued that endeavor until his death.
Guy loved our great nation and all that it stands for. He believed very strongly in the Constitution and the need for our government to adhere to it. Guy did not stand on the sidelines and just give lip service to his ideals. He challenged, worked and fought to make our nation's leaders stay the course.
Guy was a member of the Gideon's and Faith Lutheran Church. Guy was known and loved by many friends. He had a great sense of humor. He was a very caring and generous person, often helping others. Guy was thankful for his many friends and appreciated their friendship and many acts of kindness extended to him.
His strong faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior was often shared with others and remained with him until he was called home.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Holmes M. Shefstead.
A viewing is from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 7, at the Grant Mortuary.
Interment is at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Craig Cemetery.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Faith Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society in care of Grant Mortuary.
