Orin M. Johnson

Orin M. Johnson was born May 25, 1918, in Limon to Olaf and Minnie Johnson. He was raised and attended school in the Genoa and Limon area. Orin enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 18 and served in Patton's Third Army and fought in six of the 11 campaigns in the European Theater. He was discharged in July 1945.
Orin returned to his family home in Genoa and shortly thereafter went to work for the Colorado Department of Transportation. He began his career in Pueblo and was transferred to Craig in 1948. Orin worked his way up to maintenance foreman, a position he held until his retirement in 1982.
Orin married Wilda Scarlett on May 4, 1949, in Raton, N.M., and they became the parents of a daughter, Linda. Orin was a lifetime member of the Craig Elks Lodge and the VFW Post No. 4265. He loved children, enjoyed dancing, western music, bowling and baseball.
Orin died Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig following a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Gary) Velasquez, of Longmont; grandchildren Shane Warrick, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Eric Warrick, of Longmont; sister Marlene Griffin, of Craig; brother Norman (Mary) Johnson, of Laramie, Wyo.; sisters-in-law Wanda Waggoner, of Steamboat Springs, and Edna Johnson, of Craig; his best friend, Joe Brookshire, of Craig, and good friend, Fidelis, who spent many hours with him the last two years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Grace and Margaret, and brothers Melvin and Kenneth.
Crypt side service took place Friday, September 28, 2007 at Mausoleum in the Craig Cemetery with Pastor Traber Cass officiating. Musical numbers were "Homesick," by MercyMe," and "Amazing Grace" and "My chains are gone," by Linda Cass.
Pallbearers were Eric Warrick, Don Griffin, Rich Griffin, and Joe and David Brookshire. Military honors were rendered by the VFW Post No. 4265 members.
