Edgar Dale Rickerby

January 29, 1935 - July 27, 2007

Edgar Dale Rickerby was born in Rawlins, Wyo., on Jan. 29, 1935, to Thaddeus and Grace Leggett Rickerby. Dale's early years were spent on the Legget Ranch near Baggs, Wyo. The family lived on several ranches in the area including Great Divide and Elk River north of Steamboat Springs.
Dale learned to do a man's work as a young boy and continued throughout his life to take great pride in whatever work he was doing at the time. Dale's career spanned many occupations, including farming, installing carpet, and working at automobile dealerships and gas stations. He was particularly proud to have been a Snap-On Tool dealer. Dale spent the majority of his career at Colowyo Coal Co., where he retired in 1995. He then worked part time for Craig Ford and Victory Motors in Craig.
Dale served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Marshall and was honorably discharged in 1957. He served on the Moffat County Sheriff's posse and was a charter member of the Craig Police Department reserves.
Dale married Ruth Palmer in Craig in 1961. They were later divorced. Ruth's grandfather, Earnest Kline, had a great influence on Dale's spiritual life. Dale was a born again Christian and had a quiet, private relationship with his Lord.
Dale married Gwen Van Dorn Bevel on March 17, 1984, in the new home of Janet and Eldon Gerber, west of Craig. Dale took on the challenging task of raising Gwen's four children and became the father to them that they needed in their developing years. Dale gave each of them guidance and direction for their lives as they grew up and became adults, but most of all he gave them unconditional love and understanding. He welcomed each of their spouses with open and loving arms. He was delighted when each new grandchild arrived.
Dale enjoyed a number of hobbies including woodworking, boating, camping and his grandchildren. His love of antique tractors led to the ownership of four John Deere tractors and an active involvement with the Yampa Valley Antique Power Club.
Dale fought a three-year battle with Leukemia and passed away on July 27, 2007 at the home of Janet Gerber, where he and Gwen has been married 23 years before. Dale was surrounded by love with all of the children, their spouses and children, brother and sister, sisters-in-law and Gwen at the time of his death.
Dale is survived by his wife, Gwen; sons, Adrian (Christy), Brian (Jessica) and Darrin (Shawnel) Bevel; daughter, Cheryl Davis; grandchildren, Kristopher, Dustin, Desiree, Daniel, Allison, Nathaniel, Haley, Tyler, Jayden and Martika; brother, Dean (Mary) Rickerby; sister, Callie Ann Searle; father-in-law, Perry (Elizabeth) Van Dorn; sisters-in-law, Doris (John) Zimmerman and Janet Gerber; brothers-in-law, Pete (Joyce) Van Dorn and Norman (Un Chu) Van Dorn; nephew Cory Hultz, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
