The ball drop is a raffle, said Tom Knez, organizer of the yearly event. This year's event benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Craig.

"Each ball is numbered," Knez said. "When you buy a raffle ticket, say number 2,270, there's a corresponding ball with that number on it."

The balls are loaded into the back of an airplane and dropped at the golf course, over the sixth hole, Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Dana Duran said.

The balls that land closest to the hole indicate the winners.

This is the first year that the Boys & Girls Club of Craig will be the beneficiary of the event.

Duran said she's "thrilled" the club will receive funding from the tournament this year.

"(Knez) was thinking about not doing (Yahoo) this year because of the economy," she said. "But, when I told him that (the club) needed some additional funds, he said, 'Let's do it.'"

The goal for this year's fundraiser is $25,000. The money will help the club deal with budget shortfalls, Duran said.

"This year, the club needs help," she said. "We need help to keep our doors open. And, we need help to keep good-quality programs for our kids."

The club, a nonprofit organization, relies heavily on donations, Duran said.

"There is a membership fee (for our kids)," Duran said. "But it (comprises) about 5 percent of my total budget.

"The rest of it, I have to raise."

Knez was pleased the Boys & Girls Club of Craig will benefit from the event.

"They do a good job here in Craig, and they could use the money," he said. "They do a lot for kids."

The club has operated in Craig since 2004.

Duran said her staff provides "additional academic opportunities" and physical activities for area youths.

"The most important thing is fun," Duran said. "We try to mix fun into everything we do."

Prizes for this year's ball drop include a tankless water heater, a side of beef, a Gateway computer and an iPad, among numerous others.

Duran said there are also prizes for participants whose golf balls land farthest from the hole.

"You know the people who say, 'Oh, I never win'? Well, you have a chance to win by not winning," she said.
