"You know, these holidays aren't just dates on a calendar," he said. "These are events that people went forward to give us."

Today, the VFW and American Legion Post 62 are combining forces to commemorate the fallen in four separate events.

At 9 a.m., the two groups will present a flag ceremony at Sandrock Ridge Care & Rehab Center, 943 W. Eighth Drive. At 10 a.m., the groups will post colors on Yampa Avenue as part of Grand Olde West Days activities. Then, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., the groups will host Memorial Day services at Craig Cemetery and Maybell Cemetery, respectively.

The annual service at Craig Cemetery draws a crowd, Wick said.

"But, we don't go there for the turnout," he said. "We're there out of respect for the veterans, for the fallen. That's the whole reason for this.

"If it's 10 people or 100,000, we're going to do the same service every year."

The service includes posting of the colors, reading of veteran names, a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps."

Michael Lausin, commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 62, said his group will put out 683 flags at the cemetery.

"And, we'll be reading 742 names of veterans that are buried in the cemetery or out at ranches," he said. "There's a lot of veterans. We have veterans that date back to the Civil War."

The event in Maybell is a more intimate gathering, Wick said.

"It's usually a nice turnout," he said. "We usually have 30 or 40 people from Maybell turn out."

The group will place eight flags and read eight names during the ceremony. And the community gets involved, too, Wick said.

"The Maybell Women's Club makes cookies and lemonade," he said. "It's really something to look forward to. They really do a great job.

"It's an old-time-type get together at the cemetery in Maybell. It's a Norman Rockwell kind of thing."

Wick said taking part in Memorial Day services adds meaning to the three-day weekend.

"No doubt," he said. "It gives you a renewed appreciation for what we have."
