Utes beat Pups 52-19
November 20, 2000
The Vernal Utes came to Craig Middle School Saturday morning with winning on their agenda. The Utes beat the eighth grade” A” team Bullpups in a 52-19 rout.
“The Pups didn’t play that well,” Head Coach Mike LeWarne said. “But they kept their emotions under control in a tough loss.”
The Utes came out shooting in the first half and quickly took a 10-2 lead.
The Bullpups tried to come back but their shooting was ice-cold from the outside and the team couldn’t post up players underneath.
The Bullpups trailed 27-11 going into the locker room at half time.
“The Utes played tough defense,” LeWarne said. “But we missed a lot of open shots too and Vernal didn’t.”
The Utes came out strong in the second half and out scored the Bullpups 25-8 with their precise shooting and tough defense.
The Bullpups played hard but couldn’t penetrate the solid defense of their opponents. Although the Pups made some adjustments following half time, the Utes defense responded well and continued to lead the game.
The Pups struggled underneath with their rebounding as the Utes controlled the boards at both ends of the courts with their height advantage.
The Utes moved the ball well and that kept the Pups defense active.
The defense played well, but it is hard tying to stop a team who is shooting well, LeWarne said.
Despite the difficult loss, Le Warne remained positive and said that with each game, his team learns a bit more and continues to play well together.
“The team is better with every game,” LeWarne said. “The guy have to keep working at it.”
Catch the Bullpups in their next match at 4 p.m., Nov. 30, against the Soroco Rams at the Craig Middle School gym.
