U.S. 40 closed over Rabbit Ears Pass

Brent Boyer

— U.S. Highway 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass remains closed this afternoon because of the winter storm pounding the area with snow and wind.

The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that U.S. 40 was closed to traffic in both directions over the pass at about 3:20 p.m. today. There are no indications on when the pass might reopen.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Steamboat Springs until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Between 3 and 5 inches of snow are expected tonight in city limits, and there's a 40 percent chance of snow Wednesday before the storm moves out of the region in the afternoon.

Wind gusts of as high as 30 mph are expected tonight, creating dangerous driving conditions on all of the region's roads.

Motorists can avoid Rabbit Ears Pass by taking Colorado Highway 131 to I-70 at Wolcott, or by taking Colo. 131 to Toponas and heading east on Colo. 134 to U.S. 40 outside of Kremmling. However, hazardous driving conditions are being reported across the state.
