Two-day Hayden Speedway weekend

Modified class to headline race weekend

If speed is what fans want, speed is what they'll get, Hayden Speedway president Tyrrell Kochenower said.

"We have a lot of fast cars coming," he said. "With that many fast cars on the track, there are bound to be some wrecks."

At 7 p.m. tonight and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Hayden Speedway, 37900 Routt County Road 53, will host the International Motor Contest Association Modified Showdown.

Kochenower said he expects about 30 drivers to participate in the modified class.

Friday's races will run like a regular race day, he said, with Saturday being a bigger show. Saturday's winner will take home $2,000.

A number of local drivers will be competing in the special race class against drivers from neighboring states.

One of the main reasons the modified cars can go so fast is the way they are built and the different types of fuels they use, Kochenower said.

"Racers can use lots of fuels, including methane-alcohol," he said. "Having that type of fuel in the tank, we know we need to be careful."

Kochenower said there would be safety professionals and vehicles on site to take care of emergency situations.

However, the track will not be exclusive to just racers this weekend.

During intermission at Friday's races, there will be a beer dash, which includes participants engaging in a foot race on the track in hopes of winning gift certificates from Lariat Liquor in Craig.

"I think it will be something fun for the older crowd," Kochenower said. "Usually, it's the kids that get involved, so I think the adults will enjoy this."

While non-glass containers of alcohol are permitted at the races, no alcohol will be involved in the race, Kochenower said, but the gift certificates can be redeemed for alcohol.

With the scale of the event, Kochenower said he is hoping to have around 500 people fill out the stands.

"I hope to see a lot of people there," he said. "We have racers coming all the way from New Mexico to compete here."

Friday night's race will also be fan appreciation night, with adult tickets costing $5 each along with the normal pricing for 7 to 12 year olds at $4 each. Children 6 and under will be admitted for free.

Saturday will be normal pricing for adults at $8 per ticket.
