Twentymile again recognized for safety

Matt Stensland

— For the third year in a row, Routt County’s Twentymile Mine is being recognized for its safety record.

Twentymile’s parent company Peabody Energy on Friday announced the mine received the President’s Award. The award recognizes the mine that had the best safety record for Peabody’s underground operations.

Peabody Energy is the world’s largest private-sector coal company.

Twentymile, which is Colorado’s most producing underground coal mine, previously received the best underground safety award in 2005, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

This past year, Twentymile received a 1.03 safety incidence rate per 200,000 hours worked. Globally, Peabody had a 1.44 safety incidence rate. It was the best rate in the company’s 132-year history.

“Twentymile has earned its reputation as the state’s largest coal mine that is perennially among the safest in the industry,” Peabody Energy Americas President Kemal Williamson said in a news release. “To consistently achieve results of this caliber, our employees must focus on safety each and every day. Every miner deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift, and I am very proud of their achievement and commitment to safety.”

According to Peabody, Twentymile employs 335 full-time workers and injects more than $182 million into the regional economy annually.

“While our safety record is our proudest accomplishment, we are also proud of our significant role in Northwest Colorado in terms of jobs and support of projects in our communities,” said Pat Sollars, Twentymile’s general manager of operations.

Sollars credited Twentymile’s safety record to strong communication, looking out for one another and innovative ideas.
