Moffat County residents lined up Thursday morning outside the Boys & Girls Club of Craig waiting for Food Bank of the Rockies' mobile food pantry to make its first distribution in Craig.
"There was a big rush at 11:30 (when distribution began)," said Starlene Collins, Western Slope manager for FBR, noting that about 92 people received assistance in the first half of the two-hour distribution alone.
According to the agency's website, FBR utilizes its mobile pantries in areas where partner agencies are either not available, or as is the case locally, may need help meeting the needs of the community.
FBR's local partner is the Boys & Girls Club of Craig, 1324 E. U.S. Highway 40.
"We're very excited about our partnership with the Boys & Girls Club," Collins said. "A good partner is hard to find."
Kim Maneotis, unit director for the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Colorado, echoed that sentiment. She said she was encouraged by the turnout for Thursday's distribution.
"We are very pleased with the outcome we received from the residents of Moffat County," she said, adding that at least 120 people received assistance Thursday. "And talking to food bank people, the participation just increases over time."
Collins said the FBR hopes to have a food distribution in Craig every month. The mobile food pantry is scheduled to return to the Boys & Girls Club of Craig from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 10, May 15 and June 12.
After that, Collins said she hopes to have a distribution on the second Tuesday of each month, same time and same place.
"We'll try to be on time in the snow," she said with a laugh.
According to FBR policy, no qualifications, fees or forms are required.
Food will be distributed to anyone seeking assistance. Products are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis, and participants are asked to bring a sturdy bag or box to transport food home.
"We're just trying to help people, help the community," Collins said. "Please come in and pick up some items."
Anyone wishing to donate to FBR's local mobile food pantry distribution can mail checks marked "for Craig food distribution" to Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies, 734 Scarlet Drive, Grand Junction, CO, 81505.
