Trailer ignites while traveling on Highway 13 in Moffat County
June 17, 2017
A flatbed trailer caught fire heading north on Colorado Highway 13 Saturday evening.
Responders from Craig Fire/Rescue, Moffat County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol and Memorial Regional Health Emergency Medical responded to the scene at about mile marker 99, 10 miles north of Craig.
The flatbed, carrying a backhoe, unexpectedly ignited due to a mechanical issue — expected to be caused by sparks from a wheel bearing or flat tire — and the driver quickly pulled over to the side of the road.
The driver was able to successfully distance the heavy equipment from the trailer and mostly snuff out the blaze on the tires, with firefighters aiding him to be safe.
Despite damage to the trailer as a result of the flames, the situation was handled swiftly and safely, said Craig Fire/Rescue's Shane Krause.
"We just made sure everything was secure," he said. "Nothing too exciting."
